CHRIS
THILE, VICTOR GOINES AND DON VAPPIE JOIN MFLA ADVISORY BOARD
Three outstanding musicians have joined the MFLA Advisory Board
in early 2006.
Chris
Thile, mandolin player for Nickel Creek, agreed to join after
appearing with current MFLA Advisory Board member Mike Marshall
in a duo performance at the Sheldon Concert Hall in February.
In addition to his outstanding recordings with Sara and Sean Watkins
in the Grammy-winning band, Nickel Creek, Thile has released four
recordings of his own, as well as his excellent duo recording
with Marshall, Into the Cauldron.
Victor
Goines, currently the director of jazz studies at the Julliard
School of Music in Manhattan, is a native of New Orleans and a
graduate of the music program at Loyola University in his hometown.
Goines has played clarinet and saxophone with Ellis Marsalis,
Wynton Marsalis, Marcus Roberts and Terence Blanchard - in addition
to leading his own quartet. Goines has released several recordings
as a leader, including his most recent, New Adventures.
Don
Vappie, another native of New Orleans, comes from a distinguished
line of Big Easy Creole musicians that includes the legendary
Willie "Kaiser" Joseph. Proficient on tenor banjo, guitar
and several other instruments, Vappie has strong roots in the
New Orleans jazz tradition. Vappie has recorded with Wynton Marsalis
and Michael White, and his own recordings with the Creole Jazz
Serenaders are outstanding.
Welcome
to MFLA, Chris, Victor and Don!
As
part of the MFLA effort, an Advisory Board of nationally and internationally
known musicians has been formed to help bring prestige and attention
to the program. Advisory members include Muriel Anderson,
Dee Dee Bridgewater, Vassar Clements, Tommy Emmanuel, Bela Fleck, Benny Green, Stanley Jordan, Phil Keaggy, Wynton Marsalis,
Mike Marshall, Mark O'Connor, John Pizzarelli, Marlena Shaw, George Winston
and Paul
Winter.
The
role of the Music For Life Alliance is succinctly summed up by
MFLA Advisory Board member John Pizzarelli. The highly respected
jazz guitarist and vocalist states: "MFLA is filling a huge
gap created when government cut-backs reduced many of the music
programs in schools. It's a crime that the next Wynton Marsalis
out there doesn't have access to an instrument. Music For Life
Alliance provides the vital links needed. I am proud to be part
of this program and plan to encourage chapters around the country."
