SAINT
LOUIS SYMPHONY YOUTH ORCHESTRA EXPANDS MFLA INSTRUMENT DONATION
DRIVE
IN 2004-05
The
Saint Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra is teaming up with
Music For Life Alliance in a musical instrument donation
drive that will run throughout the 2004-05 season. Donated
instruments will be refurbished and provided to St. Louis
area school and community programs serving disadvantaged
students. Last season, the Youth Orchestra accepted instrument
donations at its March and May, 2004 concerts. This season,
instruments can be donated at all three Youth Orchestra
Powell Symphony Hall concerts on Nov. 21, 2004, March
12, 2005 and May 15, 2005.
Anyone donating a musical instrument at a Youth Orchestra
2004-05 concert will receive a tax donation from MFLA
for the value of the donated instrument. In addition,
instrument donors at the Nov. 21, 2004 and March 12, 2005
concerts will also receive a 2-for-1 ticket coupon for
a Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra concert during the 2004-05
season. Instrument donors at the May 15, 2005 concert
will receive a 2-for-1 ticket coupon for any Classical
Connections concert at the Sheldon Concert Hall during
the 2005-2006 season. Anyone unable to donate an instrument
at a Youth Orchestra concert can call the Sheldon Concert
Hall (314-533-9900, ext. 33) to arrange for drop off or
pick up of the instrument. In addition, tax-deductible
cash donations will also be accepted to pay for the cost
of instrument repair and the purchase of musical accessories
such as strings, reeds and sheet music.
“We are happy to collaborate with Music for Life
Alliance in this effort.” said Peggy Neilson, Youth
Orchestra Manager, Saint Louis Symphony. “The Saint
Louis Symphony, which includes our Youth Orchestra, remains
committed to improving the music outreach to our children
and area schools.”
The
Saint Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra was founded in 1970
by Leonard Slatkin and the Volunteer Association. The
members of the Youth Orchestra range from 12 – 22
years of age and come from more than 35 schools in the
St. Louis metro area, some from as far as two hour’s
drive away. The orchestra rehearses weekly September through
mid-May and presents three concerts a season at Powell
Symphony Hall. Members of the Saint Louis Symphony coach
the student musicians to further their technique and understanding
of orchestral playing. Members are selected through annual
auditions.
Muriel Anderson, founder of Music For Life Alliance, performs
a mini-concert at Fazio's Frets & Friends in St. Louis
